Welcome
Hi!
My name is Sola Long and I’m the Founder of Her Dreams Matter. My involvement with RMOF started in freshman year when I began pen-paling with a few girls in the orphanage. Because Haiti doesn't have a sophisticated mailing system, our letters were brought to the girls by members of Hearthstone Village. Always eager to read the heart-warming letters the girls sent, I learned about their hobbies, the weather in Haiti, their favorite subjects, etc. In the middle of Junior year, the CEO of Hearthstone Village came to the school to give a presentation about their work for these girls.
Inspired by the passion that resonated from the talk, I decided to start a campaign, in partnership with Hearthstone Village, to help fundraise for these girls. The evident goal was to raise money that would sustain the girls' education and living costs, but underneath it all, I was motivated to advocate for the importance of girls’ education. The fact that developing countries still have unequal learning systems is alarming. Although I am nowhere near a position to change the world, I am capable of advocating for one orphanage, to one person, at least.
Focusing on RMOF, one of the few girls' orphanages in Haiti, I hope people who have read the blogs and stories of these girls will have the same solicitous feeling I had. Moreover, we must realize that what we consider as mundane is a luxury to some, and while our minute corners of the world seem perfect, there are wars fought, tears shed and baby girls abandoned in many other parts of the world. Hopefully, through the stories of these young ladies, you can peek into these hidden parts and have sympathy, because her dreams matter too.
Sincerely,
Sola Long
