International Literacy Day was established on September 8 under UNESCO in 1966 to recognize the value of literacy, which now relates to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The ability to read and write is lowest in young females, which is why organizations such as Me to We, UNICEF, and World Vision are emphasizing girls’ education more than ever. But why is it such a big issue? Why is it important? Finally, what can we do to help? All these questions will be answered through our third blog post.
Why is the lack of girls’ education an issue around the world?
Many young girls in third world countries suffer from oppressive lifestyles due to a lack of education. Since they are perceived to have little ability to earn money, they consequently expose themselves to a life of child marriage, pregnancy, and violence. The cycle repeats with their children, and will continue so unless education intervenes.
“When children are kept in school, they get educated and they reap the benefits. I would like to tell others that when you get married at an early age, things are difficult and you lose all your rights and you suffer a lot.”
-Gloria, Global Citizen
Why is it important to support girls’ education?
Girls with higher levels of education have a higher potential of earning more money, which reduces poverty in their community. As such, chances of early child marriage and pregnancy are decreased. These girls can choose to become women before wives or mothers, leading to a general better living condition for their children.
How can we help?
Other than Her Dreams Matter, the organizations mentioned are also working to fight for gender equality through education. There are many ways to get involved in the support of girls’ schooling.
- Educate yourself: By reading these blog posts and other articles, you as a reader are learning more about the importance of issues taking place separate from your home.
- Spread awareness: Bring these organizations to the attention of your friends, peers, and family.
- Get involved: Got spare time? There are plenty of organizations seeking help.
- Provide support: Many people lack the time to commit to volunteering. Thus, they can support their favourite causes by donating or purchasing goods which provide support to those in need.
