Hello! Thank you for your continued support of Her Dreams Matter. We hope everyone is continuing to practice healthy habits and safe procedures to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
- Washing hands,
- Wearing a face mask,
- Staying physically distanced, and
- Avoiding populated areas
are crucial to helping citizens make a slow return to regular life.
In 2014 during the Ebola crisis, many schools in Africa were left empty, bringing down the number of students who could receive education. What followed after was an increase in marriage and child pregnancy (UNESCO). 6 years later, schools all over the world have experienced closures following the World Health Organization’s announcement of a global pandemic. With little access to technology or the internet, learning was paused in early 2020, especially in poorer countries.
As of August 2020, schools are slowly beginning to reopen with the implementation of strict safety precautions. However, with the increased financial burden, families in Haiti are struggling to put their children in school even more than ever. Even the prices of stationery and clothing could be too much to handle. Furthermore, the need for social distancing and constant hand washing has caused education ministries to fund health safety more than their teachers (Reuters).
For many students, the pandemic can be considered a time of stillness and boredom. For others, it is a lost opportunity to learn. When feeling troubled, seeking companionship and gratitude can help us get through hard times.
